Maluckyday obviously impressed plenty of punters in his return at Warwick Farm on Saturday with good money arriving for him at Sportingbet Australia to win the BMW and even some long range Melbourne Cup bets.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said Maluckyday had shortened from $5.50 to $3.70 for the BMW following his run in the Chipping Norton but that hadn’t deterred punters.
“We had one punter back him to take out over $20,000 and there has been a string of smaller bets too,†Sullivan said.
“It was a nice return in the Chipping Norton but we are still happy to keep laying him at $3.70 in a quality race such as the BMW.
“Descarado was a nice return as well while a lot of the chances from the Australian Cup will also head to Sydney to give him plenty of competition.â€
Sullivan said punters swarming to back him for the BMW was no shock but he was a little surprised about the number of punters wanting to back him for the Melbourne Cup.
“A couple of punters obviously thought the run was enormous as we have taken a number of bets on him to win the Melbourne Cup.
“He is the $15 favourite for the Cup after finishing second last year and there have been bets to take out nearly $30,000 this week.
“There are no huge bets but we have taken as many bets on him as every other horse combined and it is certainly unusual to see so many punters having confidence in a horse this far out from the Cup.â€
